RIVERS AND STREAMS No longer provide our best drinking water ...it could be toxic. Even high mountain streams are now contaminated with mercury ...traces of rocket fuel and arsenic has been detected. Our rivers and estuaries are contaminated with fertilizers and pesticides ...which can be evidenced at times by the killing if hundreds of fish ...and the algal blooms. Just look at the algal bloom in the photo above of this Sydney dam ...would you like to be drinking this? Salt is now common in many rivers and creeks that were once fresh ...due to the water tables and salinity changes caused in many farming areas ...often you can taste salt even a long way from the ocean ...As the water table change pesticides also leach into the rivers along with the salt. Mountain streams ...can no longer GUARANTEE the supply of clean drinking water.
